Aboriginal History in Hall's Bay
For centuries, Mi’kmaq communities traveled seasonally throughout Hall’s Bay—using Wolf Cove, Beachy Cove, Dock Point, and nearby portage routes for hunting, fishing, and trade. Notable individuals like Mattie Mitchell served as guides and trappers, reflecting the Mi’kmaq’s extensive knowledge of the land and its resources.
The Beothuk also lived and traveled in this area, particularly along the Indian River near present-day Springdale. They relied on abundant natural resources—from fish and game to birch bark—and moved seasonally between inland camps and coastal settlements. While their presence diminished over time due to disease and conflict with incoming settlers, the Beothuk’s legacy remains woven into the cultural fabric of the bay.
